In traditional publishing, many are called but few are chosen.  Most agents and editors will tell you that unless you're already well-known or have a built-in audience, it's never been harder to be chosen, it can take years to see your book in print, and you'll have to do most of the marketing because of slashed promotional budgets. 

But as traditional publishing opportunities shrink, independent publishing has exploded and is now a legitimate and, in many cases, preferable way to reach an audience. You retain complete control over the content and the look of your book, and thanks to technology and the Internet, there isn't much a publisher can do for you that you can't do for yourself, including distribution.

Established by former Wall Street Journal columnist and author Foster Winans in 1994, Prose & Pictures has been involved in the writing, editing, and publishing of more than three dozen books, the majority of which have been independently produced, and some of which have been sold to major houses such as HarperCollins and Random House.
